Camper trailers and motorhomes
Smaller rigs and driveable motorhomes bring their own questions. Here is a starting checklist.
Camper trailers and pop-tops
Camper trailers cost less than most caravans, and some buyers use a personal loan rather than a secured loan. Others choose a secured loan with the camper as security. Each option has different rates, fees and rules, so compare the full cost.
- Check the trailer's weights against your tow vehicle.
- Ask whether the lender requires comprehensive insurance.
- Think about storage, since a camper needs somewhere dry to live between trips.
Motorhomes
A motorhome is both a vehicle and a home, so lenders may look closely at its age, value and condition. Check your licence class covers the vehicle's weight. State and territory road authorities set the rules, so confirm with yours.
- Ask about services and roadworthy checks on used models.
- Check how the lender treats older vehicles.
- Compare running costs such as fuel, tyres and insurance with towing a van.
Buying privately
When buying from a private seller, a PPSR search can show whether finance is owing on the vehicle. The ACCC also publishes guidance on consumer rights when buying vehicles.
